Eugene "Luigi" Facciutto was a sought-after professional dancer from the 40's to the 60's who developed the first technique in jazz dance after suffering paralyzing injuries in a car accident. Determined to dance again, he first learned to regain control of his body by what he calls the cornerstones of his technique – namely, to “lengthen and stretch the body without strain," and “feel from the inside.’’ He went on to dance in movie musicals such as "Singing in the Rain," "An American in Paris," "White Christmas," "On the Town," "Bandwagon" and "Let's Dance," just to mention a few.

The Luigi/Feldenkrais Dance Movement Class and/or Workshop

1. The warm-up is conducted like an Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lesson, exploring the movements standing, sitting – perhaps even doing a few of the moves lying down. This may or may not be done with meditative music.
 2. Then the warm-up is done to the music on the Luigi Jazz Dance Class cd.
Students then get to experience the beneficial effects of what they've done: a.) How it frees them up; b.) How they are more balanced, coordinated and exhilarated from moving thru space to jazzy music – esp. those who inhibit themselves from dancing because they feel they are clumsy and have “two left feet”. As in a Feldenkrais ATM, they “float” out of the room feeling more confident. Participants will have fun and get a lot of insight about using the Feldenkrais Method in ways other than ATM. Whenever I have taught this, people have been amazed at how light and free they feel, and how well they can move through space.

 AS A WORKSHOP (See "WORKSHOPS")

I have been a student of the Luigi Classical Jazz Technique from the age of thirteen, have taught at the Luigi Jazz Centre in New York City as well as nationally and internationally, and incorporated his technique/style as a professional dancer performing worldwide. I have taught his Broadway/Hollywood style as classes or workshops for all levels of dancers. I also have taught it as a therapy for non-dancers and dancers by combining the Luigi Style along with the Feldenkrais Method. Either way, you are expressing yourself via the music of your soul. So let your soul dance! – DG
